As noted last month, there's been a lot of interest and excitement around Desktop Search products and technology. Today you get a chance to try out the beta version of what we call YDS (Yahoo! Desktop Search).

Yahoo! released their new Desktop Search suite as beta. Its interface is based on Windows native desktop interface, rather than using HTTP server and web browser as UI, used in Google's GDS.

The most interesting feature would be incremental search, which is not available in GDS. It sure can be a great incentive for us to switch to YDS. In addition, if Yahoo has a plan to expose its API SDK to hack around (like plugin for new filetypes etc.), it'll be really interesting for geeks.

Yahoo! acquired 33.4% of JWord stocks

Yahoo! Japan has released their acquisition of 33.4% stocks of AccessPort, the company which runs JWord. JWord is a Internet Explorer plug-in that enables keyword search on the Location bar of IE. With this acquisition, Yahoo! Japan SERP will show JWord listing results ("Regular Keywords") as well as Overture's listing ads.

Yahoo is preparing to stake its claim to a key part of the burgeoning search engine business with a desktop search tool that makes it easier to find information on the hard drives of personal computers.

Yahoo! reveals that they're planning to release their new desktop search product on the next January. It'll be based on X1's desktop search engine.
