If you follow me on Flickr you might've noticed that the amount of pictures I upload to Flickr has increased dramatically recently. It's not just because I'm back home in Japan but also I got a new camera Canon SD880 (or IXY 920 is in Japan) and it works really well.
It's a straight upgrade from my previous model Canon SD800 but this one has a new image processing engine Digic4 and has automatic face recognition, and really smart automatic exposure. Those ones I uploaded to Flickr didn't have any customization besides that I change the color to VIVID, and all other ISO and exposure settings were automatic (besides I made the default exposure to lower like -2/3). Ken Rockwell has more reviews and tips.
I highly recommend this camera as a main compact if you're not DSLR photo geek, or even if you are, the best alternative if you want to take daily photos without carrying around the heavy one.

I wonder how this would compare to something like the G10

Ken Rockwell actually compared this to G9/G10. I once tried G10 because my friend had one and while G10 is really nice, it's still bulky. SD880 is more compact, which is very important to me.

Wow, nice comparison. I'm surprised. Makes me rethink what I might get in a compact to compliment the slr. There's of course still the Lumix LX3 to contest.

Can VIVID mode be only used in Program mode?
Posted by: Dave | 2009.02.24 at 14:34
I normally take pictures with Program AE with ISO-AUTO and Digital Macro and VIVID mode applies to both. I can't think of any reason that the mode doesn't apply to other modes though.

How do you set AE in Program mode?
Posted by: Dave | 2009.02.24 at 20:07
Slide the top knob to the right and rotate the slider and you'll switch between Program AE and AUTO.

So far this camera has performed well for me at least. Disappointed that the memory chip is so small--allows only 10 pics. Still learning its functions and capabilities.
