Tiger with RSS and FOAF

When using the new Safari RSS last night, I was surpised to see that it detected the embedded FOAF data within the feed (My LJ Feed).

Safari RSS seems to support RSS and FOAF intergration: It requests <channel /> URL from RSS and parses FOAF found with Auto-Discovery.

The new version of Mac OS X, Tiger, was released today and it has an RSS screensaver.

Tiger also has a native support for RSS screensaver. So cool.

RSS Feeds for Search Results in MSN

MSN has started feeding RSS of Search Results in their Search Engine: MSN Search. Using RSS as a Search Result of some topic you like is a killer-app usage of RSS in information retrieval (think of iTunes smartlist or HDD recorder keyword tracking).

Bloglines sync API and RSS 2.0

Bloglines Sync API gives you an access to fetch all unread items in a single API call of http://rpc.bloglines.com/getitems?s=0 (s=0 means it fetches from all feeds). The response is in RSS 2.0 with multiple channels. Umm, multiple channels!

Subordinate to the <rss> element is a single <channel> element, which contains information about the channel (metadata) and its contents.

RSS 2.0 spec says RSS has "a single <channel> element". Thus XML::RSS cannot handle this form of rss and WebService::Bloglines neither (it uses XML::RSS under the table).

What'll be the best solution for it? Should I switched to other generic XML parser like LibXML to parse the response (invalid) rss 2.0 in Bloglines module?

Now I've modified WebService::Bloglines, first to filter Bloglines response XML using XML::XPath and split into valid (single <channel> in <rss>) RSS 2.0, then pass it to XML::RSS. Available as version 0.03 and going to CPAN.

flickr2rdf

Kanzaki-san, the RDF master in Japan has made an interesting tool to convert Flickr image information to RDF data. It uses flickr's tags as foaf:topic and notes as Image annotations.

Technorati Japan

Technorati just released their plan to launch Technorati Japan with Digital Garage in the next year. In Japan there've been already some RSS feed search engine Bulkfeeds (mine), FeedBack and Livedoor Future Search. It still is a good news for this industry to have a great competitor, I think.

Yahoo!'s Media RSS

On Yahoo! Search Blog, Jeremy Zawodny has revealed their plan to build Yahoo! Video Search product and its backend metadata technology: Media RSS, the extension of RSS 2.0 with enclosures.

Podcasting without an iPod

In addition to supporting synching downloaded enclosures to your iPod via iTunes, FeedDemon also supports syncing to any device that maps to a drive letter and/or supports Windows Media Player's automatic synching. This opens up podcasting to a lot of media devices.

The newest FeedDemon allows to subscribe Podcasting without iTunes or iPod. It's reasonable that "iPodder"s shouldn't stick to iPod sync API, but be flexible to drive-mounted filesystem and WMP's synching API.

Bloglines in your language!

Bloglines, everybody-loving web-based RSS aggregator now has done localization in its user interface. Grrreat to see that happen!

It uses Cookie to be baked in your preference when you click the links listed in Bloglines Languages, rather than just dispatching to the users favourite language with HTTP Accept-Languages: header. So it still gives novice users a little bit of difficulty to begin with.

RSS and BitTorrent

The use of BitTorrent with RSS has been getting some attention lately, but there have been so many feed-related ideas tossed around recently that it's hard to tell which ones have any merit. For the record, I believe this one is very worthwhile. But before we jump into why BitTorrent is so useful here, perhaps a little background is necessary?

Nick Bradbury has put up a great summary why BitTorrent is necessary for RSS 2.0 enclusures, with growing needs of podcasting.

Choice between RSS with Ads or without Ads

Publishers who depend primarily on advertising to make a living should offer two feeds: a summary-only feed without ads and a full-content feed with ads. That leaves the choice up to the user.

I think it's possible to enable this with only one feed. Summary on RSS description element, full-content with ads in content:encoded. Bloglines gives users an option for them to choose between "display entire posting" or "display summaries (if available)". All RSS aggregators should provide this kinda option like the way Bloglines do.

Overture testing RSS Ads

This came across my desk tonight from a trusted source, and I checked it out, and it seems to be real: Overture is testing RSS ads in limited release, on small(er) feeds like this one from the MobileTracker blog.

Overture seems to be testing RSS ads with Feedburner. Their new competitor Kanoodle has already done (and will do) collaboration with Moreover, Feedster and TypePad.

use Perl RSS upgreades

OK, so now journal RSS feeds should contain full text of journals with HTML. Yay. Of the form http://use.perl.org/~pudge/journal/rss.

use Perl; RSS now contains full text of entries (but it doesn't seem to use content:encoded). In addition, it now offers friends' entries in ~username/journal/friends/rss (wow!), and RSS auto-discovery link tag in its HTML.
